Groundbreadking for a new 898,560 sq. ft.facility for online retailer Wayfair Inc., announced in August, was held Tuesday at a 52-acre site on Donaldson Road, adjacent to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Paul Hemmer Company will build the expansive structure, putting more than 20 acres leased from CVG under one roof.

The facility, known at LogistiCenter at 275, will be one of the largest developments in the Greater Cincinnati region and the largest speculative development in the history of CVG. It is also the largest single development, by square footage, in the history of Dermondy Properties and its third in the Kentucky market.

Dermondy Properties is the project’s developer, in a joint venture with Hillwood Investment Properties.

It is expected to be complete in the second quarter of 2016.

The new fulfillment facility will house Wayfair, Inc., one of the world’s largest online destinations for home furnishings and decor. It will complement Wayfair’s current distribution center in Hebron, allowing the company to increase its capacity. Mayfair employs about 200 people there.

“The vision of the CVG team in offering this site for industrial development, and its strategic location, provided an excellent development opportunity,” said Gregory Arnold, Partner, Dermody Properties, when the project was first announced. “We are excited to see the project now come full circle with Wayfair as our customer. As a company, Wayfair shares our commitment to excellent customer service, and part of that commitment is getting products to their customers as quickly as possible. Dermody Properties’ development practices, combined with the logistics advantages of this location, will help them do just that.”

CVG owns and maintains 7,500 total acres. About 600 acres have been identified for development, including 167 acres the City of Florence is considering annexing to provide water and sewer.

“About four or five years ago, we determined that land development was essential in order to diversify our revenues and that it was necessary for the future success of CVG,” said Candace McGraw, CEO of the airport.
