One week before the revised Kentucky high school golf playoffs begin, Covington Catholic and Cooper won the boys and girls Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference tournaments by wide margins to become leading contenders for Region 7 titles.

On Tuesday, Cooper topped the NKAC girls field with four of the top six scorers on the final leaderboard. Eva Maley was medalist with a 4-over 76, followed by teammates Reagan Ramage (77), Kendall Brissey (79) and Ava Finke (87).
The Jaguars’ 319 team total was 47 strokes better than runner-up Notre Dame in the Division I standings. St. Henry took the Division II team title with Emma Laker of Brossart shooting the low score of 88 in that group.
CovCath won the NKAC boys tournament on Monday by a 14-stroke margin over Ryle, 316-330. The team leaders for the Colonels were Nathan Resing, who took Division I medalist honors with a 76, and Nick Thapar with a 77.
Tyler Brandstetter of Villa Madonna also shot a 76 and led his team to the Division III title. St. Henry won Division II with Kevin Tobergte’s 77 as the team’s low score.
The Region 7 boys golf tournament is scheduled for Monday at Boone Links and the girls will compete Tuesday at Kenton County Willows.
Under the new playoff format, the top two teams in each region will advance to the first round of state competition along with the top 10 scorers who are not members of those teams. There will be three tournaments in the state’s first round comprised of teams in regions 1-4, 5-8 and 9-12.
The top three teams and top 15 individual scorers in each of the three first-round state tournaments will advance to the boys and girls state finals to be played Oct. 3-8 in Bowling Green County Club.
Holy Cross, Brossart in same pool for All “A” Classic state volleyball
Holy Cross and Brossart are among the 16 teams in the All “A” Classic state volleyball tournament at Eastern Kentucky University that begins Friday with pool play that will determine the championship and consolation brackets on Saturday.
The four teams in Pool C are Holy Cross, Brossart, Trinity Christian of Lexington and Community Christian of Paducah. The two teams with the best records in pool play will advance to the championship bracket and the other two teams will be in the consolation bracket.
Holy Cross is returning to the small school state tournament for the first time since 2019 when the Indians won the championship trophy.
St. Henry volleyball player makes college commitment with WKU
Alivia Skidmore, the leading hitter on the St. Henry volleyball team, has made a verbal commitment with Western Kentucky University.
A 5-foot-10 junior outside/middle hitter, Skidmore averaged 4.20 kills in 40 sets for the Crusaders. Last season, she was a sophomore starter on St. Henry’s state championship team.
Skidmore is the second St. Henry player to make a commitment with an NCAA Division I program. In August, junior libero Elizabeth Tabeling accepted a scholarship offer from Ball State University in Indiana.
