KCPL to host traveling panels from groundbreaking 2018 Miami University Art Museum exhibit

The Covington branch of the Kenton County Library will host panels from the groundbreaking 2018 Miami University Art Museum exhibition Telling A People’s Story: African American Children’s Illustrated Literature, Sept. 10-Oct. 8.

The library will kick off the exhibit with a special event on Saturday, September 10 with a full day of fun events. Award-winning author/illustrator Shadra Strickland will present a family-friendly reading and art demonstration at 10:30 a.m. Emerging local artist Tamia A. Saunders will discuss her work through colorful illustrations at 1:30 p.m.

The exhibition, featuring 12 panels with 120 reproduced illustrations, was made possible by a grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.

The exhibit offers a lens into the cultural, historical, and social makeup of African American cultural identity while also shedding light on the long-neglected world of African American authors and illustrators in the pantheon of children’s literature. Until the 1960s, and mostly the 1970s, African American children rarely saw themselves depicted in children’s books from the perspective of African American authors and illustrators. Telling A People’s Story is a celebration of the power of illustrated children’s books that showcases their story.

The Covington Branch is open 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. Sundays. Visit kentonlibrary.org or sites.miamioh.edu for details.
