Ryle junior quarterback Logan Verax threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to give the Raiders a 21-7 win over Conner on Friday in Hebron.

Senior wide receiver Kaden Gardner caught both of Verax’s scoring passes. The first one was an 18-yard strike in the second quarter, but the point-after kick was no good.

Conner took a 7-6 lead in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Elliott Bucher and extra-point by Andrew Herron. Early in the fourth quarter, Verax put Ryle back on top with a 2-yard TD run and then completed a pass to Gardner for a two-point conversion to make it 14-7.

With 3:16 left in the fourth quarter, Gardner scored again on a 20-yard pass from Verax to clinch the victory that puts Ryle’s record at 1-1. Conner is now 0-2.

In another close game on Friday, Walton-Verona scored twice in the second half to get past Holy Cross, 14-0, at Thomas More University.

The Bearcats (2-0) broke the scoreless tie with 4:43 left in the third quarter on an 8-yard run by Ben Teipe and point-after kick by Lincoln Mann. Late in the fourth quarter, Max Montgomery caught a 6-yard TD pass from Jackson Smith and Mann converted again for a 14-0 lead.

Walton-Verona finished with 256 total yards (174 rushing, 82 passing). Holy Cross (1-1) was limited to 160 yards (112 rushing, 48 passing) and committed four turnovers.

Junior quarterback Landyn Phillips provided most of the offense for Holy Cross with 99 yards rushing and 48 yards passing. The team leader for Walton-Verona was Smith with 43 yards rushing and 82 yards passing.

The other local teams that moved their records to 2-0 with victories on Friday were Simon Kenton, Beechwood and Ludlow.

Boone County hopes to join that list of unbeaten teams tomorrow. The Rebels were trailing Scott, 13-7, in the third quarter Friday when the stadium lights went out. The game will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday at Boone County
