Newport Independent Schools launches effort to assist displaced Victoria Square Apartments families

The Newport Independent Schools has launched an effort to provide assistance and information to the students and families of Victoria Square Apartments, a Newport apartment complex that has told residents they must move.

Approximately 45 students are impacted by the evictions, which were announced earlier this week by new owners of the complex. The owners are planning a major renovation that current residents are unable to afford.

“We are deeply troubled by the upheaval and stress our families are facing with school starting in less than a month,” said Jennifer Stewart, Director of Pupil Personnel and Student Services for the Newport Independent Schools. “Newport Independent Schools is working with local community organizations to assist students and families impacted by the phases of eviction at Victoria Square Apartments. We will have more information on this at a later date, but right now we are all working to get accurate housing information, looking at grants available to these residents and other potential assistance.”

Families of school-aged students may continue enrollment at Newport Independent even if they move out of the district. Those families may contact Student Support Services at 859-292-3001 or their child’s school so that we may assist them in enrollment.

“Those families needing assistance with school clothing, hygiene items, school supplies, and/or food may also contact Student Support Services so that we can assist them,” Stewart said. “Families impacted by the eviction may receive additional food assistance at our Stock the Kitchen food pantry each Thursday. These families are going to have to save money to pay their rent, last month’s rent, first month’s rent at a new place, and to pay the deposit. We are trying to take something off of their plate.”

The district is unable to provide transportation out of the school district. But Stewart said school officials are continuing to explore how the district can help the Victoria Square families and how students and their families may be impacted.

“We are concerned about the additional trauma families are facing with the loss of housing,” Stewart said. “School enrollment and attendance for students can be one less worry.”
