Prep Sports Notebook: St. Henry volleyball team advances to quarterfinal round of state tournament

St. Henry’s volleyball team won a home match against Letcher County Central, 3-0, in the first round of the state tournament on Monday and advances to the quarterfinals to be played Friday at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester.

The Crusaders’ next opponent will be 4th Region champion Bowling Green at 2 p.m. Friday. The winner will play in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday. The state championship match is set for 7 p.m. that night at George Rogers Clark.

St. Henry (34-8) earned a state tournament berth for the first time since 2018 by winning the 9th Region championship. In the region final, the Crusaders defeated last year’s state champion Notre Dame, 3-1.

Bowling Green (34-6) made its state tournament debut on Monday and knocked off Daviess County, 3-0. The Purples’ top player is junior Kaia Barnett, who was named 4th Region Player of the Year. She finished the regular season with team-high totals of 113 kills and 944 assists.

St. Henry senior outside hitter Taylor Preston was tabbed the most valuable player in the 9th Region tournament. The Oklahoma University recruit is closing in on the Crusaders’ team record of 1,387 career kills set by 2019 graduate Maria Tobergte.

Beechwood quarterback is area’s leading rusher, scorer

Beechwood senior quarterback Cameron Hergott finished the regular season as the leading rusher and scorer in Northern Kentucky high school football, according to stats posted on the khsaa.org website.

Hergott, who is repeating his senior year after being named Mr. Kentucky Football last season, rushed for 1,186 yards on 100 carries and scored 17 touchdowns for 102 points during his team’s 10-0 regular season campaign.

He’s also going into the playoffs as the area’s second-leading passer with 1,795 yards and 24 touchdowns. The only local quarterback with more passing yards is Ryle sophomore Logan Verax, who has 1,944 and 17 touchdowns.

Hergott has a combined total of 2,981 yards in 10 games for the Tigers. Last year, the dual threat quarterback provided 3,545 total yards (2,467 passing, 1,078 rushing) during his team’s 10-2 season that ended with a Class 2A state championship.

Cooper golfer among top 48 in All-America point standings

Rylan Wotherspoon, winner of the Region 7 boys high school golf tournament the last three years, received honorable mention on the 2021 Rolex Junior All-America Team for finishing among the top 48 in the boys national point standings.

The Cooper senior accumulated 149 points competing in six American Junior Golf Association events to place 31st in the boys standings. He won the first AJGA event he entered last summer and qualified for match play in the U.S. Junior Amateur to remain among the point leaders.

Wotherspoon was named first-team all-state in Kentucky boys high school golf for the third consecutive year after the 2021 season. Last year, he topped the all-state standings and was named Mr. Kentucky Golf.
