COVID-19 update: New cases add up to 723,895 total in state, 9,293 deaths; vaccinations best protection


In his full COVID-19 report Thursday, the Governor announced 2,305 new COVID-19 cases across the Commonwealth, bringing the case total to 721,895. Friday’s end-of-day total of 2,008 brings the total even higher: 723,889.

594 of Thursday’s new cases were children 18 and younger. 1,354 Kentuckians remain hospitalized. 399 people remain in the ICU, with 270 on a ventilator. The Governor also announced 52 deaths on Thursday.

By end of day Friday: 552 new cases in those 18 and under; 31 more deaths, bringing total deaths in the state to 9,293, and 239 were on ventilators.

The state’s positivity rate was 8% by Friday’s end.

On Friday, Boone County reported 69 new cases, Kenton County 56, and Campbell County 29. All three NKY counties remain in the red zone.

As of Thursday, 98 counties across the state were in the red zone on the state’s COVID-19 incidence rate map, including all but four counties in the mountains. Wayne, Menifee, and Elliott counties are orange on the state’s COVID-19 incidence rate map, while Morgan County is the only yellow county in the state.

Russell County now leads the state with an incidence rate of 84.5 per 100,000 people. Morgan County has the lowest incidence rate in the state at 7.5 per 100,000 people.
