City of Dayton, Dayton Independent Schools coordinate to improve traffic safety infrastructure

While students have been enjoying their fall break, the City of Dayton has been hard at work improving pedestrian access on streets surrounding Lincoln Elementary and Dayton High School. Utilizing the lack of student, teacher, and parent traffic through these areas, the City’s public work crews have made improvements to key intersections and parking areas. Students and parents can expect to see fresh paint on crosswalks and stop bars, new flashing stop signs, and redesigned handicap-accessible parking spaces,

“We greatly appreciate the continued partnership with the City of Dayton to Grow our students. The improvements of the lighted stop signs and the painting of our crosswalks are greatly appreciated as they help keep our students, staff and families safe,” Dayton Schools Superintendent Jay Brewer said.

“The City of Dayton continues to be a great collaborative partner in our mission to Inspire, Engage, and Grow our students. We Grow Together!”

The redesigned handicap-accessible parking spaces on Green Devil Lane are now ADA-compliant and van-accessible. Parents and students, who use vans with ramps, now have the necessary space allowing them to safely load and unload wheelchairs out of their vehicles.

The City asks the community to not utilize these spaces unless they possess a handicap license plate or placard. Parking tickets will be issued for violators.

In addition to school safety improvements, the City has added pedestrian signage on crosswalks along Sixth Avenue, and a new crosswalk on Dayton Avenue. All improvements are in accordance with the City’s desire to create a more walkable environment in the City’s downtown and school areas.

Improvements include:

• New flashing stop sign, repainted stop bar and crosswalk at the intersection of Green Devil Lane and Third Avenue
• New lashing stop sign at the intersection of Clay Street and Fifth Avenue
• Redesigned handicap-accessible parking spaces on Green Devil Lane
• Repainted parking lot striping on Green Devil Lane
• New crosswalk added to Dayton Avenue connecting parking lot to First Baptist Church
• New pedestrian signage along Sixth Avenue
