Thief takes equipment used to make IDs, drivers’ licenses from Kenton County Administration Building

A brazen thief broke into the Kenton County Circuit Clerk’s office on January 26 and stole equipment used to make drivers’ licenses and ID cards.

The suspect was caught on camera and the Kenton County Police Department has released the images, along with a description.

The office is located in the new Kenton County Administration Building on Simon Kenton Way in Covington. The thief is believed to have entered the building through doors on the loading dock.

The Kenton Circuit Clerk’s office posted this statement on its website and social media account on January 26, but there was no mention of the theft.

“The Covington office of Driver’s License will be closed Monday January 27th due to equipment failure at that office only. The Independence office will be OPEN normal hours 8 am to 4 pm. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

The Kenton County Police Department statement, which includes a description of the suspect, is included below.

We are seeking your help in identifying a burglary suspect. On January 26, 2020 a white male broke into the Kenton County Clerk’s office inside the Kenton County Administration Building at 1840 Simon Kenton Way, Covington, KY. While in the Clerk’s office the subject removed some of the items needed to manufacture drivers’ licenses and ID cards.

He is believed to be approximately 5’8” to 5’9”, thin build, and wears glasses (possibly brown rims). Video shows him wearing a dark gray pullover hoodie, black pull over face/ski mask, blue jeans and black boots. Subject was also carrying a black backpack and black duffle bag.

    Thief makes case for better security at the County building, and perhaps some newly elected officials next time around. Kenton has a good sheriff, a good county judge, and that’s about it. Need new bodies all around.
