Transportation Cabinet Minority Internship Program spring semester application deadline approaching

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) continues to pave the way for higher education students to gain paid, hands-on work experience to build a stronger future workforce.

The Minority Internship Program (MIP) provides professional development opportunities to minorities, women, and other individuals who have been historically underrepresented in the transportation industry.

The spring semester application deadline is Nov.15, 2019.

Designed for undergraduate and graduate students of Kentucky colleges and universities, this paid internship is open three times a year to a maximum of 15 interns. Interns can earn an hourly rate of up to $11.75, depending on the number of credit hours earned.

“Our goal is to provide valuable experience to students through our Minority Internship Program and empower them with skills that will aid them in their future careers,” said Jamir Davis, executive director of the Office for Civil Rights and Small Business Development. “Today’s young people are the future of America. We’re aiming to find young talent with a diverse background to begin their careers as interns with us.”

Interns will have the opportunity to work in a variety of participating Cabinet offices located in Frankfort, ranging from administrative work to engineering and technology fields. MIP includes formal mentoring, networking opportunities, hands-on work experience, and exposure to transportation-related careers.

Mikeal Watson, the current program coordinator and a 2018 MIP intern, knows first-hand the impact the program has in launching careers.

“My only knowledge of the transportation field was road work, and I had no idea that it included a broad network of individuals who are experts across multiple disciplines,” said Watson. “I was grateful for the opportunity to gain real, hands-on work experience, and to be acknowledged as a valuable member of a team, not just an intern. The program is a great opportunity for students to gain insight into KYTC and to possibly venture into career paths they may not have previously considered.”
