Small Business Saturday: Mayor Meyer made proclamation, reminding to keep $$ close to home

Staff report

Covington Mayor Joe Meyer has declared November 30 Small Business Saturday, reinforcing the national effort to support buying from small, local businesses.

See his proclamation here.

Small Business Saturday falls between Black Friday and Cyber Monday to capitalize on one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year — and to emphasize that small business is the backbone of local economies.

One study found that for every $100 spent at a local business, $68 of it stays within the local economy, compared to $43 for large businesses.

But, more importantly, say advocates, small businesses create an atmosphere, a vibrancy and a uniqueness in a community.

Small businesses make up more than 99% of all businesses in the U.S. and employ 47.5% of the workforce.

For consumers, Small Business Saturday is an opportunity to try something you haven’t done before — shopping in a local boutique, eating at a locally-owned restaurant not yet tried, sharing an adventure with friends — and keeping your dollars close to home.
