Scott won the Class 2A girls state cross country championship trophy for the second consecutive year with eighth-graders Maddie Strong and Juliana Ellington leading the way in Saturday’s season finale at Kentucky Horse Park.

Strong placed third and Ellington came in seventh for the Eagles, who took the top spot in the team standings with 74 points. Christian Academy of Louisville was runner-up with 97 points followed by Highlands with 125.

Strong crossed the finish line in 19:38.53, the fastest time recorded by any Northern Kentucky girl in any class in Saturday’s state meet. Scott’s other scoring runners beside Ellington were sophomore Dyllan Hasler (12th), freshman Allison Clemons (26th) and junior Laney Coleman (30th).

Highlands junior Maggie Schroeder placed 10th. She won last year’s Class 2A state meet, but health problems plagued her this season. After not running in last week’s regional meet, Schroeder returned to the lineup Saturday and ended the season on a positive note.

Brossart placed second in the Class 1A girls state meet after winning the title the last two seasons. The top local finishers in that race were Brossart freshman Amy Klocke (fourth), St. Henry freshman Reganne McMain (fifth) and Calvary Christian eighth-grader  Kaylee Holtzapple (ninth).

Campbell County seventh-grader Olivia Holbrook made an impressive debut in the Class 3A girls state meet by placing 16th with a time of 19:42. She was the youngest runner among the top 40 finishers in the large school field.

Two local teams — St. Henry in Class 1A and Conner in Class 3A — earned third-place trophies at the boys state meet. It was Conner’s best finish ever in the large school class.

St. Henry senior Sean Ryan placed fifth in the Class 1A race. The top local finishers in Class 3A were CovCath senior Joseph Kiely (12th) and Conner seniors Will Hanak (18th) and Peyton Fairchild (19th). Kiely’s time of 16:26.98 was the best among local runners in any class in Saturday’s races.

Highlands placed fourth in the Class 2A boys state meet. Scott senior Will Sandlin placed 19th and Highlands freshman Sam Hopper followed him across the finish line in that race.

The top 10 times recorded by local runners in the state meet races are listed below. Complete results are posted on the khsaa.org website.
