Prep Sports Notebook: Scott senior running back needs 42 yards to join list of top local rushers

Scott senior running back Quincy Perrin needs 42 rushing yards to reach the 5,000 mark in his high school career, but it looks like crossing that threshold won’t be easy in Friday’s playoff game at Boyle County.

One of the reasons Boyle County is undefeated and seeded No. 1 in the Class 4A playoff bracket is a hard-nosed defensive unit that has allowed only 40.3 rushing yards per game, according to team statistics.

In the first round of the playoffs, Boyle County’s defense held Anderson County to 46 yards on the ground. Last Friday, Lexington Catholic finished with negative-25 rushing yards against the Rebels.

Perrin enters Friday’s game with 4,958 career rushing yards in four varsity seasons. This season, he has picked up a school record 1,680 yards in 11 games for a 152.7 average that ranks 14th in the state and third among Class 4A teams.

After an injury in the season opener limited Perrin to two carries for eight yards, he had a hard time getting on track. He had a three-game rushing total of just 152 yards in early September.

In the last eight games, however, the 5-foot-9, 200-pound tailback has been nearly unstoppable, rushing for 1,528 yards and a 191 per-game average. He picked up 180 yards or more in six of those eight games and surpassed 200 yards three times.

If Perrin rushes for 42 yards or more against Boyle County on Friday, he’ll become the sixth Northern Kentucky player to reach the 5,000 mark in his career. The others are Shaun Alexander of Boone County (6,662), Cory Farris of Boone County (6,227), Steve Everson of Newport Central Catholic (5,633), Ricky Buckler of Bellevue (5,277) and Preston Herron of Boone County (5,014).

Calvary Christian will not compete in girls varsity basketball

Calvary Christian will not play girls varsity basketball this season, according to the 10th Region coaches media guide that was posted online Monday.

Last season, Calvary finished 13-15 with two seniors, three juniors, one sophomore, one freshman and seven junior high students on the varsity roster. The Cougars had a 2-8 record in Division III conference games with both victories coming against Silver Grove, a school that closed last spring.

The only girls basketball teams in Division III this season will be Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow and Villa Madonna. Calvary’s withdrawal will also leave just three teams – Brossart, Scott and Campbell County – in the 37th District playoff bracket.

The Calvary Christian boys basketball team will continue to compete in the Division III conference and 37th District. The boys team posted a 20-11 record last season, but leading scorer Mason Rusch transferred to a high school in North Carolina last summer.

Rusch began playing varsity basketball for Calvary Christian as an eighth-grader and scored more than 2,000 points over the last four seasons. He was named Division III Player of the Year by Northern Kentucky coaches the last two years when the Cougars finished 20-11 and 19-12 behind his prolific scoring.

Ryle graduate is freshman starter on college basketball team

Ryle graduate Lauren Schwartz is averaging 9.5 points and 4.3 rebounds as a freshman starter on the Rice University women’s basketball team that nearly pulled off a major upset Sunday.

Texas A&M, ranked No. 5 in the country, made a shot with nine seconds remaining to slip past the unranked Rice team, 62-61. Schwartz scored 14 of her season-high 19 points in the second half for the Owls, who now have a 2-2 record.

Schwartz was a three-year starter on the Ryle girls basketball team that won its first state championship last season. In her final season, she set team records in both career scoring and rebounding for the Raiders and was named Division I Player of the Year by local coaches. She was also voted one of the top 10 players in the state.
