Northern Kentucky University is among the best schools in the nation for military veteran support, according to Military Times.
The Best for Vets: Colleges 2020 Ranking evaluated hundreds of institutions across the country on university culture, student support, academic policies, academic outcomes, cost and financial aid. This is NKU’s seventh straight year being nationally ranked by Military Times, and it is the only Greater Cincinnati educational institution to make the list.
“It’s a unique experience moving from service to the classroom, and our goal at the Veterans Resource Station (VRS) is to create a community with resources and a support system. The ability to spend time with other student veterans who share similar military experiences and can help navigate being in college,” said Travis Roy, Veterans Resource Station coordinator. We are proud to once again be recognized by Military Times right when we are honoring the legacies of veterans.”
NKU will also continue the tradition of honoring current and former U.S. military members on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Many events are being held around campus, including:
Flag Raising and Wreath Laying Ceremony
Noon/Flagpole behind Nunn Hall, adjacent to the HIC Building
VRS honors the legacy of those who have fought for our nation’s freedom. The ceremony will include a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony, a bugle performance of “Taps” and a bagpipe player to remember fallen service members.
Veterans Recognition Luncheon
12:30 p.m./University Center 135
Immediately following the ceremony, a luncheon will be held to recognize NKU’s veterans. There is no cost to attend the luncheon, but space is limited. RSVP here or by calling (859) 572-7609.
Fill the Boot Campaign
Collections end on Nov. 18/Veterans Resource Station, University Center
All donations will be sent to a deployed Army National Guard unit currently serving in Iraq. Individually wrapped snacks and servings of microwavable foods are suggested as well as travel-size grooming supplies, coffee and pre-packaged beef jerky.
Friends of Steely Library Co-Hosting Author Hampton Sides,
6:30-8:30 p.m./Erlanger Branch Library
The NKU Friends of Steely Library are hosting a free Veteran’s Day presentation with Hampton Sides, author of “On Desperate Ground.” Sides’ epic narrative explores one of the most harrowing clashes in American history, the Korean War’s Battle of Chosin Reservoir. The event is free and open to the public, and books will be available for purchase. Visit here to register.
NKU serves over 500 veterans, active family members, National Guardsmen, reservists and ROTC students. The Veterans Resource Station, established in 2013, provides seamless assistance with applications, financial aid, VA education benefits, advising, registration career services and more. The university also received the Military Friendly School Gold Status by Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life.
