Funeral services for local legend Stan Steidel scheduled for Sunday at Dayton High School

Funeral services for Stan Steidel, a former high school coach, teacher and administrator, will begin Sunday with visitation from 12-4 p.m. in the gym at Dayton High School where he began his education career. There will be a tribute to acknowledge his accomplishments after the visitation.

Steidel died Monday evening at the age of 78 in an automobile accident. He spent 53 years in education and made several important contributions to Kentucky high school athletics. As founder and director of the Kentucky All “A” Classic, he provided state tournaments in several sports for small schools across the state.

During his career, Steidel served four terms on the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control. He was executive director of the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference and past president of the Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Association.

He was named Kentucky High School Athletic Director of the Year twice and inducted into the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010. The gym floor at Dayton High School was named in his honor last year.

Steidel is survived by his wife, Louise Jean (Baker) Steidel; daughters Melanie Pelle, Jennifer (Joe) Jones; grandchildren Paige Pelle, Steven (Abby) Pelle, Jordyn and Joel Jones; great grandchild Addyson Pelle; brother Thomas (Sharon) Steidel and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Steidel, and son in law, Steve Pelle.
