Mummert, Mohs combine for 24 kills, Thomas More extends home win streak to 27 with sweep of Wittenberg

Jenna Mummert and Emily Mohs each slammed down 12 kills as Thomas More swept past Wittenberg, 25-17, 25-15, 25-14, on Tuesday night in the Connor Convocation Center.

Madison Krumpelman added eight kills for the Saints, who attacked at a .337 clip and held the visitors to a .019 hitting percentage. Sawyer Lorentz finished with six kills and six blocks, while Jess Ginn led the Thomas More defense with 16 digs.

Mummert attacked at a blistering .526 clip, converting 12 kills in 19 attempts with just two errors. Mohs hit .375 and added three blocks, while Krumpelman attacked at a .400 clip and scooped up 13 digs.

Lizzie Schoenfeld dished out 18 assists and served up a pair of aces for Thomas More, which extended its home winning streak to 27 matches. The Saints haven’t lost at home since Sept. 21, 2016, when Hanover pulled out a five-set victory in the Connor Convocation Center.

Maddie Read added 16 assists as Thomas More improved to 16-6 overall with the non-conference win. Sara Crooker finished with 11 digs for the Saints, who hit .500 in the final set and coasted to the victory.

Katie Hiestand led Wittenberg (10-7 overall record) with seven kills. The Tigers were ranked No. 25 nationally in last week’s NCAA Division III poll, but the visitors struggled offensively against the defense of NAIA opponent Thomas More.

Thomas More plays host to Mid-South Conference foe Shawnee State at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The Saints are 7-2 in Mid-South Conference play and in sole possession of second place.

Shawnee State is 7-21 overall, 3-8 in the Mid-South Conference. The Bears, however, took Thomas More to five sets earlier this season before dropping a 25-16, 25-27, 25-23, 16-25, 15-11 decision at Portsmouth, Ohio.

TMU GOLFERS WIN TOURNEY: The Thomas More women’s golf team won the Roger Merb Invitational on Tuesday, finishing with a total of 734 (372-362) at the Elks Country Club in McDermott, Ohio.

Thomas More’s Rachel Hummel finished third individually with a score of 175 (91-84). Alex Schutte placed fourth with a 177 (88-89), while teammate Cora Bradford shot a 183 (92-91) to finish fifth.
