Lewis & Clark in Kentucky; famed expedition is subject of BCM’s Brown Bag Luncheon Oct. 17

At the direction of President Thomas Jefferson, Captain Meriwether Lewis and his close friend Second Lieutenant William Clark visited Big Bone Lick in the early 1800s to gather the fossilized remains of mammoths and mastodons during their four-year expedition across the western portion of the United States.

Unfortunately, their initial finds were lost when the riverboat they were shipped on sank in the Mississippi. However, a subsequent trip turned up hundreds of fossils, which were then sent to the White House, earning Big Bone ‘the birthplace of American vertebrate paleontology’ title.

Lewis’ and Clark’s discoveries and the importance of their cross-country mission will be the topic of a presentation by Jim Mallory of Lexington, vice chairman of the Lewis and Clark Trust, Inc. at Behringer-Crawford Museum’s  Brown Bag Luncheon on Thursday, October 17.

With more than 1,000 miles of the Lewis and Clark trek within its borders, Kentucky has the longest section of the trail in the east. Mallory, a past president of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, will give an overview of the expedition and discuss its Northern Kentucky connections. Mallory has a lifelong interest in history, focusing on the Lewis and Clark era. He and his wife Paula have traveled the coast-to-coast trail of the Lewis and Clark expedition since 1985.

The lunch and presentation will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the museum’s TOYOTA Education Center at 1600 Montague Drive-Devou Park, Covington KY 41011. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.   Guests should bring their own brown bag lunches. BCM will provide drinks, dessert and discourse. Cost: $3 for BCM members; $10 for future BCM members. Reservations requested at 859-491-4003.
