Student groups across Kentucky will be participating in the 2019 High School Challenge sponsored by Kentucky Circuit Court Clerk’s Trust for Life (TFL) and Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA).
The participating high school groups can win prize money and individual students can apply for scholarship opportunities.
“The Donate Life 2019 High School Challenge is a chance for Kentucky students to learn about the importance of organ, cornea and tissue donation, along with sharing that message with others in their schools and communities,” said Crysta McGee, Donate Life KY Community Educator. “I hope that local students will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”
The 2018 challenge resulted in 2,800 new donor registries and organizers are hoping to surpass that number this year.
Club chapters, such as from DECA, FFA, FBLA and HOSA, will do different activities to educate others about donation and encourage them to register as potential donors. Each chapter compete against each other to register the most organ donors.
First place winners receive $1,000, 2nd place $500, and 3rd $250. In addition, there will be prizes for group’s meeting the set goals, social media activity and student scholarship opportunities.
Trust For Life receives financial support from Kosair Charities and is a part of the inaugural class of its Leadership Development Institute.
Keith Inman, Kosair Charities President, said the Trust For Life is doing incredible work to improve the lives of people in communities across the state.
“We want the Trust For Life to thrive for years to come,” Inman said. “It is amazing how high school students can help to educate others locally about saving lives through organ and tissue donation.”
The competition will run Oct. 13-Nov. 4, and the competition theme this year is “Be Magical, Be an Organ Donor.” Just like last year, groups will be encouraged to get creative with marketing efforts.
Students will be educated on how to earn points in the challenge upon signing up to participate.
