Thirteen-year-old charged with kidnapping, vehicle theft, for allegedly stealing car with baby inside

A 13-year-year old boy is charged with kidnapping and theft by unlawful taking – auto, in relation to a stolen vehicle report Thursday.

In a release, Covington Police state that the car was reported a stolen from Indiana Avenue at about 4:15 p.m. with a 22-month-old child still inside. The thief struck a parked car while fleeing, according to the report.

The vehicle was recovered on Ashland Avenue in Latonia Terrace with the baby still inside.

Covington Police say the juvenile, who is not being named because of his age, admitted to taking the car. Another youth (age 14) was brought in for an interview in relation to the incident but was not charged.

Covington Police issued the following statement regarding the incident:

At 1615 hours on August 15, 2019, Covington Police Officers were called to the 2800 block of Indiana for a stolen vehicle with a 22-month-old baby still inside. The thief struck a parked truck on Indiana while fleeing. Officers canvassed the area and recovered the vehicle a short time later at the top of Ashland Ave. in Latonia Terrace. The vehicle was abandoned with the baby still inside. The suspects took the vehicle owner’s cell phone when they fled from the vehicle. Officers located witnesses who gave a description of the suspects and located 2 juveniles matching the suspect descriptions at Decoursey and Inez. One of the suspects, a 13-year-old juvenile, was found to have the victim’s cell phone in his pocket. Both juveniles were brought to headquarters for an interview. The 13-year-old juvenile admitted to taking the vehicle and cell phone and was subsequently charged with Kidnapping, Theft by Unlawful Taking – Auto (O/$500, U/$10,000), and Receiving Stolen Property (U/$500). The other subject, a 14-year-old juvenile, was not charged and was released to his parents. 

Due to the age of the suspects, their information will not be released. No further information is available at this time.
