Northern Kentucky University receives grant to assist effort to prevent interpersonal violence

Northern Kentucky University’s Norse Violence Prevention Center (NVP) starts the academic year with a new director and new location on campus.

NVP is dedicated to preventing and addressing interpersonal violence, including sexual assault, partner violence and stalking on NKU’s campus.

As part of these efforts, the NVP team works to engage students, faculty, staff, and community partners to create a healthy and inspiring environment where violence of any kind will not be tolerated.

Director Kendra Massey, who brings more than 15-years’ experience to NVP, facilitated the move to the new suite in the Albright Health Center.

With the larger space, NVP is expanding its prevention programs and increasing accessibility of advocacy services including a dedicated trauma-informed meeting space for student survivors.

A three-year grant from the Office on Violence Against Women provided the expanded resources and created two new positions, a full-time project coordinator, contracted through Women’s Crisis Center, and a part-time advocate.

“We want the campus, especially the first-year students, to understand that we are here to support them in a confidential environment,” said Massey. “The beginning of the semester is a busy time for us. We do trainings that include educating students about consent and bystander intervention. Our Bystander Intervention training helps students be aware of what’s happening around them and feel empowered to speak up and do something to help everyone stay safe.”

Massey’s prior experience serving as the vice-president of Programming for Women Helping Women, a non-profit agency in south-west Ohio, provides her perspective to NVP’s advocacy services for students. The NVP team will meet with campus groups and organizations to provide training sessions and continue to share the key messages in the “It’s on Us” campaign.

NVP invites students to stop by during open house events on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1- 3 p.m. through the end of August. A ribbon-cutting and community open house for the new suite will be take place Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.

NVP’s new location is Suite 246 in the Albright Health Center, adjacent to the Campus Recreation Center. For more information on NVP’s events this fall, visit its website.
