2019 Prep Football Previews: Senior running back continues to be Scott’s main threat in new offense

The NKyTribune is featuring each of the 21 high school football teams in Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties leading up to the first games of the 2019 season on Aug. 23. We will then provide focused coverage of our local teams throughout the regular season and into the playoffs.

Eric Turner installed a new offensive scheme for his first season as Scott’s head football coach, but the main threat will continue to be senior running back Quincy Perrin, who has rushed for more than 2,800 yards and 35 touchdowns over the last two years.

Despite defensive fronts designed to limit his production, Perrin averaged 116 rushing yards per game last year. He’s the top returning running back in Northern Kentucky going into the 2019 season.

“Quincy is one of those rare backs that only come along so often,” coach Turner said. “This year, we will hopefully be able to reduce the amount of (defensive) players in the box, which will help him get loose.”

With four returning senior offensive linemen to run behind, Perrin could be hard to contain once again. If Turner’s new offensive scheme keeps opponents from keying on the 5-foot-10, 200-pound tailback, he could surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the third consecutive season.

“Offensively, we will look to spread the ball around and challenge defenses horizontally and vertically by attacking all areas of the field,” Turner said. “Defensively, we want to be an attacking group. We want to fly around the field and make plays to get the ball back to our offense.”

Scott’s returning offensive linemen are seniors Jacob Randall, Trevor Addison, Eric Linton and Kaden Krallman. In addition to opening running lanes for Perrin, they’ll need to protect sophomore quarterback Gus Howlett, who saw action in just one varsity game last season when the Eagles posted a 7-5 record.

Scott’s defensive unit had 12 interceptions and 12 fumble recoveries last season, but the players responsible for most of those take-aways graduated. The top returning starter on defense is senior linebacker Nigel Robinson, who made a team-high 103 tackles with 63 solo stops and seven quarterback sacks. He also returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

“We feel if we can stay healthy and really buy into the team and build a family bond with each other, we will be successful this year and make a big run into the post-season,” Turner said.

The Eagles had a 4-4 record in Class 4A playoff games over the last four years. All four of their season-ending losses came against a Johnson Central team that went on to play in the state championship game each year.

To make it back to the playoffs, Scott will have to finish among the top four teams in a new Class 4A district that includes Holmes, Harrison County, Boyd County and Rowan County.

“We have and will continue to work to get better at doing what we do,” Turner said. “We have had a great offseason. We look forward to the season starting and the players are really getting a better idea of the one team and family concept we preach daily.”
