The suspect in a earlier shooting in the same area that resulted in non-life threat injuries to the victim remains at large.

Investigators have arrested Kermanuel L. Rice, 37, of Cincinnati, and charged him with murder in the killing of Le’Monte Shields, 19, also of Cincinnati.

Tuesday evening Covington  Police officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of the City Heights complex.

Officers located a male victim, later identified as Keevonte Thornton, 18, of Covington. Thornton was transported to University Medical Center in Cincinnati, was treated, and has since been released.

At about 1:47 a.m. Wednesday, as officers were clearing the area from the shooting involving Thornton, another incident occurred in close proximity to the first shooting.

Officers responded back to that area and located Shields, who was suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The particulars of both the initial shooting incident and the homicide remain under investigation.

Rice is in custody at the Kenton County Detention Center.
