Ashleigh Cleary to study abroad
Ashleigh Cleary, an international affairs and Chinese major at Western Kentucky University is one of five WKU students awarded Boren Scholarships to study abroad for one year.
She is the daughter of Mary and Thomas Cleary of Hebron.
Cleary has previously earned a Freeman-ASIA and U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to study in China. At WKU, Ashleigh has conducted research on the public and governmental response to the growing visibility of the LGBT community and same-sex marriage in Taiwan, publishing her findings with Dr. Timothy Rich in an article in the Taiwan Sentinel. She intends to pursue a career in human rights advocacy, particularly focusing on the potential of LGBT advocacy to promote democratic norms abroad. She will attend Nanjing University in Nanjing, China.
Dylan Sterling of Independence honored
Washington State University Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture recognized outstanding students, faculty and staff at its annual convocation ceremony. Among those honored was Outstanding Sophomore, Dylan Sterling, a construction management major from Independence who transferred from University of Louisville.
This year, Sterling and his Virtual Design and Construction teammates earned first place at the national Associated Schools of Construction competition. He will also be a returning intern this summer at Mortensen Construction, working as a part of the company’s Virtual Design and Construction team that is developing the new Raider’s football stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Beechwood Band Boosters awards scholarship
Beechwood Band Boosters named Ashley Mullins the 2019 Sarah E. Menez Memorial Scholarship recipient.

Ashley was a member of the Beechwood Marching Tigers (2016-2018); the Beechwood Jazz Ensemble (2016-2019) where she held the 4th, then 2nd and now 1st chair trumpet; the Beechwood Jazz Lab (2016-2017); the KMEA State Championship Marching Tigers first place (2016), 2nd place in 2017, and 3rd place in 2018. She was President of the French Club (2017-2018) and a member of the Spanish Club (2016-2019), and Spanish Honors Society (2016-2019). She was a member and new archer mentor in the Archery Club making KHSAA State in 2014 and NASP State in 2015-2018. From 2014-2017 she was a member of the Art Club working in different mediums. And lastly, she was a member of the National Junior Honor Society (2016-2017).
Upon receiving the award, Ashley said, “Sarah Menez’s love of music and the arts, as described in her bio, make her someone I wish I had the chance to know. I plan on using the scholarship to fund my continued involvement in music programs throughout college, including UC’s marching band.”
The Sarah E. Menez Memorial Scholarship was established in 2014 by the Beechwood Band Boosters in association with Joseph Menez to honor the memory of his late wife Sarah Menez. One scholarship is awarded annually for tuition assistance to a senior attending Beechwood High School who has best represented the personal qualities of Sarah Menez, musicianship, academic promise and who has been accepted at an accredited college or university.
