To remove barriers to higher education and to increase the number of skilled workers in the high demand sectors of the region, Gateway Community & Technical College will begin offering evening medical assisting courses during the 2019-2020 academic year.
Qualified candidates may be able to take the courses free.
Medical assisting courses for the fall 2019 semester will be on Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Daytime classes are still available.
Gateway’s medical assisting program offers certificate, diploma, and Associate in Applied Science options. Students can earn an Associate in Applied Science in two years if full-time status is maintained.
A medical assistant is an integral member of the health care delivery team, qualified by education and experience to work in the administrative office, the examining room and the physician office laboratory. The Medical Assistant, also a liaison between the doctor and the patient, is of vital importance to the success of the medical practice.
An individual in this versatile career may perform the following clinical duties according to state law:
Taking medical histories and recording vital signs
Performing electrocardiograms and venipunctures
Administering injections and immunizations
Explaining treatment procedures to patients for examination
Assisting the physician during examinations
Gateway’s medical assisting students will be prepared to take the Registered Medical Assistant national certification examination through the American Medical Technologists upon graduation.
Medical assistants find employment in physician offices, outpatient clinics, and other ambulatory health care facilities. As health care continues to expand, the demand for medical assistants is growing much faster than the average for all other occupations.
Gateway’s medical assisting program qualifies for free tuition through the Work Ready Kentucky scholarship.
To apply for the Work Ready Scholarship, you need to be a U.S. citizen, be a Kentucky resident, have a high school diploma or GED, have not earned an associate degree or higher, be enrolled in or accepted to an eligible postsecondary institution in an approved program of study, and not be in default on any obligation to KHEAA.
