In celebration of National Drinking Water Week, observed by water utilities May 5 through May 11 with the theme Protect the Source, Kentucky American Water awarded a 2019 American Water Environmental Grant in the amount of $4,975 to the Licking River Watershed Watch.
The environmental grant program provides funds to community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect the watersheds, surface water and groundwater supplies in local communities.
Kentucky American Water has awarded approximately $200,000 in such funds since 2006, the year the program launched in the Commonwealth.

Licking River Watershed Watch will use grant funds for monitoring water quality in the Licking River Watershed and then using the data to identify problem areas so that communities can work together to make necessary improvements.
Project partners include Thaxton’s Canoe Rental, UK Green Thumb Group, 3M Company, Kentucky Division of Water, Northern Kentucky University Department of Biological Sciences, Fouser Environmental, Morehead State University Water Testing Lab and Microbac.
