Kenton County Parks and Recreation fishing derby at Middleton-Mills, star gaze at Lincoln Ridge coming up

It’s free. Even adults won’t need fishing licenses when they are helping their kids because it’s ‘Fish Free in Kentucky’ weekend. It provides a great opportunity to start a family tradition.

Don’t worry if you have never fished before. KCP&R will have everything for you and your child to enjoy a great day of fishing including spincast rods and reels, hooks, bobbers, and bait.

Enjoy lunch at the park. NKB Concessions will be open. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken tenders, snacks, soda, water and sports drinks are available.

At all other times, it’s acceptable to keep a catch from either of the ponds in Middleton-Mills Park. During the Kids Fishing Derby, however, KCP&R will be introducing kids to good conservation habits and sportsmanship and will be practicing ‘catch and release’.

There will also be prizes awarded for the ‘Big Fish of Each Species’ contest.

KCP&R will need fishermen and fisherwomen to help youngsters who may need it. Come on out to Middleton-Mills Park, share your experience, and help teach kids the fun of fishing!

Middleton-Mills Park is located at 3415 Mills Rd., Covington, KY 41015.

KCP&R collects donations of non-perishable food and personal care items for Be Concerned.

Lincoln Ridge Park host site for star gaze

Kenton County Parks & Recreation, the Cincinnati Observatory Center, and the Midwestern Astronomers are hosting a free Star Gaze on Saturday, June 8 for amateur and professional astronomers, as well as all other interested participants.

A preparatory indoor presentation will be presented beginning at 8:30 p.m. and last about an hour in the Kenton County Public Works Administration building at Lincoln Ridge Park.

The Presenter will be Aaron Eiben, who will present a program on “A Tour of the Universe.” Aaron is a Physicist at the University of Cincinnati and former staff Scientist at the Cincinnati Observatory. The “Tour” will be a computer generated tour of the major attractions in the universe followed by a question and answer period.

The outdoor portion of the program (weather permitting) will begin immediately following the indoor program. Opportunity to see what’s visible in the sky through our telescopes following the presentation if the skies are clear.

Volunteers from Friends of the Observatory Center and the Midwestern Astronomers will provide telescopes and expertise in the field, describe observations, answer questions, and help open our eyes to the wonder of the universe. Who knows what the night sky will reveal? We welcome you to bring your telescope and binoculars.

Come on out to Lincoln Ridge Park and discover another world of wonder. Lincoln Ridge Park is located at 420 Independence Station Rd., Independence, KY 41051.
