But his biggest challenge was out of the squared circle.
His daughter – Sarah – was born with sensorineural heating loss.
“Between the ages of three and four Sarah had severe non-verbal skills,” said the 32-year-old Augur, who is a Direct Support Person at Redwood.
Sarah, 9, is a client.
“At first, we tried hearing aids,” Ed Augur said. “There was no real results after about two years. Sarah couldn’t even recognize words.”
Redwood was the logical answer.
“I worked there before Sarah was born and knew what they could do for her,” Augur, a 14-year Redwood staffer, said.
The decision was made – by a physical therapist – to try implants. “It was a risk,” said Augur, a grad of Northern Kentucky’s Holy Cross High School. “But it worked.”
Ed and Sarah recently shared their story at Redwood.
The Commonwealth of Kentucky recognized Ed as a top Director Support Person in 2018 – the only DSP to be so-honored in Northern Kentucky.
Redwood guides children and adults with severe and multiple disabilities to achieve independence and reach their highest potential throughout their lives, by providing enriching educational, therapeutic and vocational services.
Blessed Sacrament School teachers to volunteer at Redwood
A group of 35 teachers from Blessed Sacrament School will tour and volunteer at Redwood Friday, March 15 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., according to Lisha Smith, Training Specialist for the Northern Kentucky non-profit special needs facility.
“People at Blessed Sacrament asked us to view Redwood,” Smith said. “Some of their students have volunteered here through challenge groups.”
The plan is to have the teachers divided into pairs of twos and threes. They will volunteer in both the childcare classrooms as well as all the adult programs.
