The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra will kick off its All-American concert on Saturday with a techno-driven opener, featuring a breathtaking view and soundscape of the Grand Canyon, with a leather-clad closer not-to-miss.

It’s the KSO’s American Pie concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at NKU’s Greaves Concert Hall.

Recently named “Composer of the Year” by Musical America, Mason Bates’ orchestral works are noted for their unique integration of electronic sounds. The KSO opens its program with the regional premiere of his “Mothership,” a piece first premiered by the YouTube Symphony.

The American warhorse, the Grand Canyon Suite was inspired by Ferde Grofé’s jeep trip to the Canyon in 1916. He musically captured the sights and sounds of a national treasure. To celebrate Grand Canyon National Park’s 100th anniversary, the KSO will display stunning images and video curated by Stephen Lias.

Violinist Sandy Cameron joins the KSO for Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto.  Declared “brilliant” by the Washington Post, violinist Sandy Cameron is one of the most strikingly unique artists of her generation. Cameron has toured throughout the world and is noted for her work with former Oingo Boingo frontman and award-winning film score composer Danny Elfman. To close out the All-American evening Sandy will return to perform in Elfman’s Suite from the film Edward Scissorhands with the KSO and the NKU Women’s choir.

Cameron made her debut at age 12 in The Netherlands and has since performed as a soloist around the world. The violin played by Cameron was crafter by Pietro Guarnerius in Venice c. 1735 and is on extended loan by the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

On the program, KSO Music Director J.R. Cassidy said, “American composers continue to add bold flavor and architecture to symphonic music via technology and vivid soundscapes, while offering new forms and fireworks for both soloists and the orchestra.”
