The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will start a highway safety improvement project on KY 17 (3L Highway) in Kenton County to straighten several curves and address drop-off areas. Construction work will begin Monday, Feb. 18.

The project will focus on several areas along a 5.6-mile section of KY 17 from KY 16 to KY 14.  It will include ditch and shoulder improvements to address drop off concerns, elevation improvements to correct curve geometry, and pipe replacements and extensions to improve drainage and roadside safety.

“We are excited to begin construction and to address several areas along KY 17,” said Bob Yeager, chief district engineer for KYTC District 6. “This safety project will improve 13 curves and roadway drop-off areas which will provide a safer road for area residents and commuters.”

While most of the work will be done using flaggers for traffic control, there will be times when the road will be closed to through traffic between 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.  Portable message boards will be in place to give advance notice of closures.

Work is projected to be complete by summer 2019.

Riegler Blacktop of Florence, Ky., was awarded the project with its low bid of $1.1 million.

Motorists and residents are encouraged to subscribe to the District 6 Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/KYTC.District6) or follow District 6 on Twitter (https://twitter.com/KYTCDistrict6) for updates.

Florence-based Kona Ice hosts annual Konvention

Kona Ice is celebrating its tenth annual “Konvention” on February 7-10 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. The annual convention is a chance for the franchisees to meet and collaborate. There will also be an unveiling of a new element on the trucks, and a reveal of new flavors in its Krafted line aimed at adults.

The Konvention comes at an exciting time for the brand, as Kona Ice was recently ranked #67 overall on Entrepreneur Magazine’s 2019 Franchise 500 list. The brand was also named number one in the “Frozen Desserts” category, a great feat for the company.

Following a year of significant growth, Kona Ice added nearly 150 new trucks in 2018, bringing the total to more than 1,000 trucks plus 250 Minis (the brand’s miniature version of the truck able to go indoors) to communities throughout the United States.

Bringing tropical tunes and cups of shaved ice everywhere it stops, Kona Ice offers its distinctive blend of entertainment and gourmet frozen treats across 49 states. Equally as appealing as the icy treats that the brand offers is its philanthropic commitment in the communities it serves. Nationwide, Kona Ice has donated more than $60 million to community-based organizations since the launch in June 2007.
