As IGNITE Institute moves toward August opening, Boone school board approves Kenton agreement

With 173 days and counting before the opening of the IGNITE Institute in August, the Boone County School Board voted unanimously to approve a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kenton County schools.

The vote came during a special board meeting Tuesday night.

The MOU now goes to Kenton County School board for approval.

The MOU between Boone and Kenton Counties is the first stage in the formation of a formal contract between the two districts to operate IGNITE Institute as a joint STEAM venture.

Some of the issues the MOU dealt with included the projected costs per student between districts which will be reduced with Kenton County’s participation, the overall costs of operating the facility and the value of the STEAM curriculum that the Kenton County Academies brings to the table.

The Kenton County Academies curriculum dramatically reduces the cost of start-up and shortens the implementation phase for Boone County Schools. This allows Boone County Schools to receive a State Workforce Development grant.

Kenton County School Board will hold a special board meeting Monday, February 25, at 4:30 p.m. to consider the MOU.

Kenton County Superintendent Dr. Henry Webb says, “We want to congratulate the Boone County School District and the Boone County Board of Education for approving the MOU merge with Kenton County for IGNITE.”

Boone County Schools Superintendent Dr. Randy Poe says, “IGNITE Institute is our response to the business community’s workforce development needs. Through a world-class curriculum with career/college pathways, IGNITE will open a new world of possibilities to students.”

Innovative science, technology, engineering, arts, and math teaching at IGNITE will prepare the workforce pipeline with creative and educated workers for the future.

IGNITE will be the catalyst to help the region retain business and be a magnet for high-value industries to locate here, enabling Northern Kentucky to compete globally.

Together the aim is achieving excellence and lowering the costs for each district, making students’ future success a reality, said Poe.
