Scott girls earn berth in Kentucky 2A Championships behind big game from sophomore newcomer

The Scott girls basketball team clinched a berth in the first Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament with an 83-55 win over Mason County in the Section III semifinals on Thursday.

Sophomore forward Mya Meredith had another big game for Scott. She finished with 37 points, 13 rebounds, eight steals and seven assists in the victory that lifted the Eagles’ record to 11-7.

Meredith, who transferred to Scott last summer, is among the state’s leading scorers with a 25.2 average. She averaged 17.5 points as a freshman starter for Newport last season.

Scott will play Mercer County (10-5) in the Section III final at 6 p.m. Monday at Mason County Fieldhouse. Both teams will advance to the inaugural Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament Jan. 18-20 at Owensboro Sports Center.

The semifinals of the boys Section III tournament will be played Friday at Mason County Fieldhouse. The matchups are Scott vs. Mason County at 6 p.m. and Bourbon County vs. Mercer County at 7:30 p.m.

The boys sectional final is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday with both teams advancing to the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament next week.

All “A” Classic regional tournaments

The Walton-Verona boys and girls basketball teams are one win away from sweeping the 8th Region All “A” Classic championships for the second consecutive year.

In the semifinals of the boys regional tournament on Thursday, Walton-Verona defeated Trimble County, 69-54, to post its 10th win by double-digit margins and run its record to 12-2.

The Bearcats will play Gallatin County (12-4) in the regional final at 7 p.m. Saturday at Trimble County with the winner advancing to the Kentucky All “A” Classic small-school state tournament Jan. 23-27 at Eastern Kentucky University.

On Wednesday, the Walton-Verona girls team defeated Owen County, 62-55, in the regional semifinals with junior Emma Strunk scoring a game-high 19 points for the 12-4 Bearcats.

Walton-Verona will play Williamstown in the girls regional final at 7 p.m. Friday at Williamstown to decide a  representative in the small-school state tournament.

The 9th Region All “A” Classic girls semifinals will be Friday at Holy Cross with St. Henry vs. Newport Central Catholic at 6 p.m. and Ludlow vs. Holy Cross at 8 p.m. The championship game is set for 7 p.m. Saturday.
