The Scott girls basketball team won big and the boys team lost in overtime in the Section III finals of the Kentucky 2A Championships on Monday at Mason County Fieldhouse.

The Eagles routed Mercer County, 69-33, to take the girls sectional title. In the boys final, Bourbon County made six free throws in the final seconds of overtime to pull out a 78-73 win over Scott.

All four teams will advance to the inaugural Kentucky 2A Championships boys and girls state tournament that begins Friday in Owensboro.

This is the first year that statewide basketball playoffs have been organized for schools with enrollments of less than 1,000 students that are too big to compete in the All “A” Classic playoffs.

The winner and runner-up teams from four sectional tournaments will be competing for boys and girls state titles this weekend. The opening-round match-ups on Friday include Scott girls vs. Adair County at 9 a.m. and Scott boys vs. John Hardin at 1:30 p.m. Both of those are local times. Owensboro is one hour behind.

In the boys sectional final on Monday, Scott led 53-41 early in the fourth quarter. Bourbon County rallied and took a 65-62 lead with less than 30 seconds left, but Scott senior guard Kyren Simpson hit a 3-point bank shot that sent the game into overtime.

Scott senior guard Chad Ohmer scored 28 points before fouling out with 46 seconds left in overtime and the score tied, 72-72. That’s when Bourbon County made two of the six free throws that won the game.

The leading scorer for the Scott girls in their sectional final was sophomore Mya Meredith with 22 points, followed by sophomore Sofia Allen with 18 and senior Summer Secrist with 17.

Meredith, who transferred to Scott last summer, is among the state’s leading scorers with a 24.9 average. She averaged 17.5 points as a freshman starter for Newport last season.
