One of the original tenants at Newport on the  Levee has closed.

Mitchell’s Fish Market opened its doors at Newport on the Levee in 2001 and was a longtime anchor restaurant at the entertainment destination.

A sign on a door to the entrance of the building Tuesday confirmed the closing.

“This location has closed. We are grateful for the friends we have made and we look forward to serving you at another one of our locations nearby.”

Mitchell’s Fish Market had its food service license revoked temporarily by a health inspector in December 2017, but the closing is not believed to be related to that incident.

Newport on the Levee issued the following statement on the closing of the restaurant:

“Thanks, Mitchell’s Fish Market for 17 great years at the Levee! We wish them all the best. Here at Newport on the Levee, along with our new owners, North American Properties, we are actively working on exciting new concepts for the Mitchell’s space and many others as we reimagine our future. We’ll be announcing more in the coming months. Until then, we’d like to hear what our community would love to have at the Levee and in the Mitchell’s restaurant space specifically. Share your ideas with us at hello@newportonthelevee.com or on our social media accounts, and the person with the best idea gets the chance to sit down and meet with our design team.”

Cincinnati-based North American Properties announced in December that it had completed its purchase of Newport on the Levee.

At that time, the owners announced plans to invest more than $100 million to renovate the property.

Mitchell’s Fish Market has 12 locations nationwide, according to its website, including three in Ohio. Its West Chester restaurant remains open.

Mitchell’s was a great seafood place to eat when they first opened. But after awhile we stopped going because they did away with the great eating Grouper filets and other great eating seafoods. Tilapia and Fried Catfish are good but do not know why they quit serving the real good seafoods they had at first..
