Legendary jockey Steve Cauthen will be inducted into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony that’s free and open to the public at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Villa Hills Civic Club.

Steve Cauthen

When he was 18 years old, Cauthen became the youngest jockey to win horse racing’s Triple Crown by riding Affirmed to victories in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Preakness. The Walton native was named the 1978 Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated magazine following that historic accomplishment.

Cauthen continued his career in Europe and is the only jockey to have won both the Kentucky Derby and the Epsom Derby in England. He retired with 2,794 career wins and was inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1994.

On Wednesday, a 15-minute program about Cauthen’s quest to win the Triple Crown will be presented by Dr. James Claypool, a local historian, author and professor emeritus at Northern Kentucky University.

The other hall of fame inductees on Wednesday will be Eugene Records of Holmes and Jackie Lee Collins of Campbell County. They were both three-sport athletes in high school.

There will also be an awards ceremony with the inductions. Butch Brownfield and Terry Keller will both receive the Bill Cappel Award for their volunteer efforts. Donna Wolfe will receive the Pat Scott Award and Jillian Daugherty will receive the Tom Fricke Award.

Randy Marsh, who was named director of umpiring for Major League Baseball in 2018, will be the guest speaker for Wednesday’s event.
