People in News: Karl Lietzenmayer gets history award, teacher Haney honored, Becker joins Interact

Leitzenmayer, Behringer-Crawford receive history awards

The Kentucky Historical Society presented Karl Lietzenmayer, of Covington, with its Lifetime Dedication to Kentucky History Award, and the Behringer-Crawford Museum with an award for educational programming.

Karl Lietzenmayer

Lietzenmayer has edited and produced the bi-annual Northern Kentucky Heritage magazine for 25 years and has promoted and documented Northern Kentucky history in many other ways — as researcher, adviser, tour guide and writer. He also has encouraged preservation of original documents and photographs and helped start an intern program for budding historians.

KHS recognized the Behringer-Crawford Museum exhibit, “Korea: The Forgotten War,” for drawing attention to and preserving the stories of Northern Kentuckians who served in the conflict overseas and at home. To develop the exhibit, Behringer-Crawford used recorded oral histories, diaries, letters, photographs and artifacts. More than 6,000 people saw the exhibit between Aug. 5 and Oct. 1, 2017. Some shared stories of their own involvement in the war with the museum.

These two awards were among 12 KHS presented at its annual membership meeting and History Awards presentation. The Kentucky History Awards honor individuals, organizations and communities for their efforts to promote and preserve state and local history.

Teacher Jeff Haney receives national honor

Holmes High School teacher Jeff Haney received the highest honor given to Project Lead The Way teachers – PLTW Outstanding Teacher.

Jeff Haney

PLTW Outstanding Teachers and PLTW Outstanding Educational Leaders are selected through a competitive nomination and selection process for their focus on empowering students to thrive in this evolving world. They have demonstrated a strong record of the following:

 Delivery of an inspiring and empowering student experience in the classroom; this includes success implementing high-quality PLTW programs and inspiring students to apply learning beyond the classroom.

 Expanded access to career learning for students in the school and community.

 Teacher leadership within the classroom, school, or district, using innovative methods to engage students in activity-, project-, problem-based learning, and active pursuit of professional and personal development.

Haney’s PLTW Biomedical Science class introduces high school students to medicine and human body systems, preparing them for careers in medical and health-related fields. Working with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs, PLTW Biomedical Science students step into the roles of medical investigators, surgeons, microbiologists, geneticists, and biomedical engineers. The program’s collaborative, hands-on explorations inspire students to dream big and motivate them to make a real impact on those around them, while preparing them with the know-how and experience to make their life-changing ideas a reality.
