Good news arrived twice on Tuesday for the Thomas More University volleyball team.

It began with freshman outside hitter Emily Mohs being named the AVCA’s NCAA Division III National Player of the Week. Later in the day, Thomas More jumped from seventh to fifth in the Division III national poll.

Mohs hammered down a career-high 36 kills on Saturday as Thomas More upset No. 1 Calvin (Mich.) in five sets, 29-31, 28-26, 14-25, 25-20, 15-13, at the Midwest Invitational at Grand Rapids, Mich. The Saints improved to 22-2 and handed previously unbeaten Calvin (19-1) its first loss.

For the week, Mohs tallied double-digit kill totals in four other matches, never hitting below .250. She also attacked at a .474 clip during a win against Elmhurst (Ill.) at the Midwest Invitational.

Mohs’ previous career-high for kills was 29, set earlier this season in a five-set win at Transylvania.

A graduate of Seton High School in Cincinnati, Mohs is just the third player in Thomas More history to receive the national honor from the AVCA. The most recent Saints player to earn the recognition was Leslie Hoelscher on Sept. 5, 2006.

Mohs has slammed down a team-leading 329 kills this season and ranks 17th nationally in that category. The 6-foot-1 freshman is also hitting at a .347 clip.

Despite the home loss to Thomas More on Saturday, Calvin remained No. 1 in the national poll. The Knights are followed in the Division III poll by Johnson & Wales (R.I.), Wittenberg, Colorado College and Thomas More to round out the top five.

Thomas More is now 5-2 this season against nationally ranked opponents. The Saints, competing as independents this season, are aiming for an at-large berth in the upcoming NCAA Division III Tournament.

Thomas More will play host to Transylvania at 7 p.m. Friday in the Connor Convocation Center.
