Second annual Salute to Service 5K Run-Walk at Levee on Saturday benefits USO; support the troops

Newport on the Levee is honored to host the second annual Salute to Service 5k Run-Walk to benefit the United Service Organizations (USO) on Saturday, October 20, at 9 a.m.

Newport on the Levee will donate an additional $5 to the USO for every person who crosses the finish line, calling it “Finish for Five.”

“Newport on the Levee is proud to partner with the USO to support the men and women in our armed forces,” said Barney Estes, general manager of Newport on the Levee. “It is our absolute honor to have the opportunity to give back to our military families who have given so much to us.”

The USO’s mission is to strengthen America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation. The organization offers a variety of programs and services designed to support our service members and families, especially during the holiday season coming up.

“Whether you walk, run or crawl, making it to the finish line will help support our troops who are taking care of our great country, both here and abroad,” said Sherry Ems, executive director of the USO of Central and Southern Ohio, which provides funds to support military in 65 counties in Ohio, Northern Kentucky and West Virginia.

“We want to thank Newport on the Levee and all participants. By supporting our local USO, you help us to be the force behind the forces,” Ems said.

“The work we do to support the local military is much appreciated by our service members and their families,” she said. “Often times through USO programs and events, our military can have experiences that they may never be able to have if it wasn’t for the USO.”

The family-friendly race, presented by Big Blue Moving, starts and finishes on the Kentucky side of the Purple People Bridge. It costs $20 to participate for civilians, and only $10 for a military member, veteran or youth (children under 12) registration. Included with registration are a free t-shirt and swag bag.

“We will use the money to support the units in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area,” Ems said. “Now is the time many units are in need of support for Holiday family parties. Often times they need assistance with covering expenses, which the USO is glad to support.”

Prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place male and female and 3rd place overall, then all participants are invited to the after party at Axis Alley complete with two drink tickets and free bowling.
