Mohs collects 26 kills, No. 5 Thomas More improves to 25-2 with victory at Otterbein on Saturday

The freshman sensation from Thomas More University continued tormenting opposing volleyball teams with her superlative attacking skills on Saturday.

Emily Mohs collected 26 kills and attacked at a .375 clip as Thomas More posted a 25-16, 25-13, 20-25, 25-21 win over Otterbein at Westerville, Ohio. The Saints, who are ranked No. 5 nationally in the AVCA’s NCAA Division III poll, hit a torrid .318 and improved to 25-2.

Mohs, a freshman from Seton High School in Cincinnati, leads Thomas More with 385 kills this season. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter is attacking at a .336 clip and averages 3.93 kills per set.

Senior setter Jenna Fessler finished with 53 assists, while sophomore defensive specialist Jessica Ginn added 19 digs. Freshman middle hitter Julia Popova recorded six blocks, and junior right-side hitter Alli Borders finished with four blocks.

Thomas More won the opening two sets by hitting .421 in the first and .400 in the second. Otterbein (19-6 overall record) fought back and won the third set, but Thomas More attacked at a blistering .438 clip in the fourth stanza to wrap up the victory.

Jenna Mummert collected 12 kills and four service aces. She also hit .429 with two blocks.

In its first match Saturday, Thomas More rallied from an early one-set deficit to defeat Muskingum, 22-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-19. Mummert hit .409 with 10 kills and three service aces for the Saints, while Mohs tallied 18 kills and five blocks.

Junior outside hitter Sara Crooker served up three aces and scooped up 14 digs. Fessler dished out 41 assists and added 19 digs. Muskingum dropped to 21-5 with the loss.

GREEN BAY DEFEATS NKU: Ashley Sledge recorded 14 kills and a .433 hitting percentage as Green Bay defeated visiting Northern Kentucky University in four sets on Saturday. The Horizon League-leading Phoenix won by scores of 25-17, 22-25, 26-24, 25-17.

Green Bay improved to 14-8 overall, 9-1 in the Horizon League. The Phoenix also avenged an early-season loss to the Norse.

Haley Libs led NKU (13-8 overall, 5-5 Horizon League) with 14 kills and 22 digs, marking her 13th consecutive double-double. Shelby Olsen extended her double-double streak to seven matches with 30 assists and 17 digs, while Miranda Wucherer also hit double figures in both categories with 22 assists and 12 digs.

NKU plays host to IUPUI next Saturday at 4 p.m. in Regents Hall.

NORSE MEN’S SOCCER WINS THRILLER: Tom Suchecki netted a goal with 57 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the NKU men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Cleveland State on Saturday in Highland Heights.

Rizwaan Dharsey assisted Suchecki’s winning goal, a close-range shot that eluded the Cleveland State goalie. It was Suchecki’s first goal of the season.

NKU improved to 10-5 overall, 3-3 in the Horizon League. Cleveland State fell to 4-7-2 overall, 1-3-2 in the Horizon League.

The 10 wins are the most for NKU as a Division I program.
