Willis scores goal, adds two assists as NKU men’s soccer improves to 4-0 with 3-2 win at Robert Morris

Alex Willis scored a goal and assisted on two others as the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team improved to 4-0 with a 3-2 win over Robert Morris on Sunday at Moon Township, Pa.

After Robert Morris took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute, Willis evened the contest at the 32:40 mark by finishing with a header off an assist from Connor Probert. It marked the sixth goal of the season for Willis, a freshman from Faversham, England.

The Norse gained a 2-1 lead early in the second half when Calvin Murphy tapped in a shot from close range off an assist from Willis. NKU extended its advantage to 3-1 at the 55:28 mark on Alex Greive’s goal off a rebound shot. Willis and Probert both assisted that score.

Robert Morris (0-3-1) narrowed the NKU lead to 3-2 in the 88th minute when Zac Sherman chipped a shot over the goalie into the net. It was the second goal of the contest for Sherman.

The Norse have won each of their first four contests by one goal, including a trio of 3-2 victories. NKU also posted a 2-1 win at Duquesne. This is the Norse’s best start since 2011, when they began the season with seven consecutive victories while still competing at the NCAA Division II level.

NKU begins Horizon League play next Saturday when Wright State visits Highland Heights for a 7 p.m. contest.

HANOVER MEN’S SOCCER DEFEATS THOMAS MORE: Tanner Korfhagen scored a pair of goals Sunday afternoon to lead the Hanover men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Thomas More.

Korfhagen scored twice in the opening 25 minutes to stake Hanover to a 2-0 lead. Thomas More’s Nick Gish countered with a goal at the 32:36 mark off an assist from Hrusto Selimovic to slice the Hanover advantage to 2-1, and the defenses controlled the field the remainder of the contest.

Hanover improved to 1-1, while Thomas More dropped to 1-1.

Hanover goalie Will Bedel recorded eight saves to notch the victory. Thomas More’s Jeff Paulin collected three saves.

Thomas More plays host to in-state rival Transylvania on Thursday at 2 p.m. at BB&T Field in Crestview Hills.
