Thomas More volleyball, NKU men’s soccer both remain unbeaten; Libs collects 30 kills, 34 digs

The Thomas More College volleyball team captured the 40th annual Ohio Northern University Invitational on Saturday, sweeping past Bluffton and then knocking off 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon in four sets at Ada, Ohio.

Thomas More defeated Bluffton by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 25-19, as setter Jenna Fessler recorded a double-double with 14 assists and 10 digs. Middle hitter Jenna Mummert tallied 10 kills and six blocks in that win, while outside hitter Emily Mohs finished with four blocks.

In the win over nationally ranked Carnegie Mellon, Mummert added 17 kills and hit .353 as the Saints prevailed by scores of 25-11, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20. Thomas More attacked at a .270 clip and limited Carnegie Mellon to just a .107 hitting percentage.

Fessler and Mohs were named to the all-tournament team from Thomas More, which improved to 4-0.

Thomas More plays host to Cincinnati Christian at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills.

NKU MEN’S SOCCER REMAINS PERFECT: Alex Willis scored two goals, including the winner in overtime, as the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team posted a 2-1 win at Duquesne on Friday night.

With the score tied 1-1 in overtime, NKU’s Alex Greive played a cross from the right side into the box to Willis, whose header to the left of the goalkeeper in the 96th minute found the back of the net for the win.

Willis, a freshman from Faversham, England, also tallied a goal in the first half to give NKU a 1-0 lead. Duquesne tied the contest at 1-all early in the second half, and neither team could find the back of the net the remainder of regulation.

For the season, Willis has scored five goals and added an assist.

NKU improved to 3-0, while Duquesne dropped to 0-2. The Norse conclude their road trip in Pennsylvania on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest against Robert Morris.

LIBS IGNITES NKU VOLLEYBALL WIN: Haley Libs finished with 30 kills and 34 digs as the NKU volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit to knock off host Northern Illinois, 21-25, 23-25, 30-28, 25-21, 15-11, on Saturday night at the Holiday Inn Express Invitational at DeKalb, Ill.

Miranda Wucherer collected a triple-double for NKU with 13 kills, 33 assists and 14 digs. Wucherer also served up two aces for the Norse, who improved to 3-3.

Earlier on Saturday, Nevada posted a 25-16, 25-22, 28-26 win over NKU. The Norse finished 1-2 at the two-day tournament.
