Second Sight Spirits and Marvel Comic artist collaborate on new Black Belly Navy Strength Rum

Second Sight Spirits, a Ludlow-based craft distiller known for their small-batch rums and Kentucky Bourbon, today announced a new collaboration with Ludlow-based illustrator and tattoo artist, Brian Level of Illuminaut Tattoo.

The two brands collaborated to create Black Belly Navy Strength Rum, which goes on sale today.

A Navy Strength rum is a higher proof spirit at 57 percent alcohol by volume (ABV), 114 proof. Other Second Sight offerings range from 30 percent ABV, 60 proof to 45percent ABV, 90 proof.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Brian on such a bold and unique product,” said co-owner Carus Waggoner.  “Collaborations with local artists is one of my favorite parts of Second Sight. Brian has created incredible art for our distillery in the past and in return, we’ve developed his vision for a Japanese-inspired rum with black tea, spearmint, and vanilla beans – and at 114 proof. It’s as dynamic and bold as Brian himself.”

Level is not only a tattoo artist but also an illustrator whose latest works include Marvel Comics Thanos Legacy Series #1 and Rhinegiest’s Roar lion illustration.

Level’s vision for the collaboration draws upon his love of traditional Japanese tattoo design; using a Japanese mask with dark and mysterious lore to inspire the label design and its deep black tea flavor.

Black Belly Navy Strength Rum will be released at Second Sight Spirits (301 B Elm Street, Ludlow) today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and includes a meet and greet with artist Brian Level. The first 88 bottles have been signed by the artist for release.

Second Sight Spirits has been producing hand-crafted rum in its Northern Kentucky distillery since 2014 and recently debuted Oak Eye Kentucky Bourbon, the first bourbon produced in Kenton County since Prohibition.
