Scott football team opens district play against opponent it defeated in overtime last season

Scott’s football team won all four of its Class 4A district games last season. The closest one was a 27-21 win against Mason County in overtime.

The two teams will play their first district game of the 2018 season on Friday at Scott and there’s a good chance it will be another tight battle. Both teams have a 2-2 record and rely on running backs that average more than 100 rushing yards per game.

Scott junior Quincy Perrin is averaging 108 rushing yards per game.

In four games, Scott junior Quincy Perrin has rushed for 431 yards on 73 carries and Mason County senior Seth Chambers has picked up 463 on 59 carries. They both have scored four touchdowns.

The other district games on Friday are Harrison County at Holmes in Class 4A, Walton-Verona at Owen County in Class 2A and Brossart at Nicholas County in Class 2A.

Holmes has an 0-4 record and scored only one touchdown in its last three games without injured senior quarterback James Walker, who passed for more than 900 yards last season.

His replacement, sophomore Quantez Calloway, had 94 yards rushing and 74 yards passing in a 24-18 season opening loss to Brossart. But the Bulldogs weren’t able to put any points on the board in their next two games and lost to Lloyd, 50-8, last Friday.

Harrison County is off to a 3-2 start after posting back-to-back wins over two smaller schools. The Thorobreds shut out Owen County, 55-0, last Friday and blanked Paris, 37-0, two weeks ago.

Stopping the run will be the first order of business for the Holmes defense. Harrison County rushed for more than 300 yards in its last two wins and is now averaging 280 yards per game on the ground.

Two local teams with perfect records have away games on Friday. Simon Kenton (5-0) visits Highlands (4-1) while Covington Catholic (5-0) travels to Ohio for a game with Columbus DeSales (3-1).

In this week’s Litkenhous statewide power ratings, Highlands was No. 4 and Simon Kenton was No. 15. But the Pioneers have won the last three games between the two teams, including a 35-30 come-from-behind victory last season.

Both teams have first-year starters at quarterback this season. Highlands senior Grady Cramer has passed for 741 yards and eight touchdowns. Simon Kenton senior Caleb Farfsing has 534 yards passing and 516 yards rushing with a team-high eight touchdowns.
