NEWSMAKERS: Nancy Grayson brings passion, expertise to new Horizon Community Funds

Staff report

This is part of a series on the NKyTribune’s NEWSMAKER award winners who will be recognized and celebrated at the Community Celebration annual event on Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at RECEPTIONS in Erlanger. The award honors those who have commanded headlines throughout the year and brought positive attention to Northern Kentucky. Tickets are available here.
Nancy Grayson’s journey to prominence in Northern Kentucky is – first – owed to a propitious meeting at church camp where she became friends with Suzy Grayson. Suzy later introduced Nancy to big brother, Trey. One thing led to another and Nancy Humphrey became Nancy Humphrey Grayson and settled in Northern Kentucky in 2000.

Second, when a group of forward-thinking NKY leaders was looking for the perfect chief for the Horizon Community Funds, a philanthropic community foundation, they hired Nancy Grayson.

By then Grayson had made a name for herself as a community service and community engagement superstar.

It was a perfect fit.

As President, she is responsible for implementing
the vision and strategic direction of Horizon Community Funds as set by the Council of Trustees, working collaboratively with other community leaders to serve the community’s needs.

The foundation itself is a major development for Northern Kentucky, as it grows a permanent endowment and a terrific philanthropic resource.

She was working part-time for the Northern Kentucky Education Council and was serving on numerous boards of organizations dedicated to improving education, promoting healthy family relationships, and preserving the natural resources and history of Kentucky.

She currently serves on the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence Board of Governors, Kentucky Historical Society Governing Board, Kentucky Philanthropy Initiative Governing Board, Metropolitan Club Board of Governors, Trinity Episcopal Church Vestry, and United Way Northern Kentucky Action Council.

She previously served on the governing boards of the Boone County Public Library, Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission, Family Nurturing Center, and Northern Kentucky Montessori Center.

A recognized leader, Grayson received the Northern Kentucky Champion for Education Award in 2011 and is an alumna of Leadership Northern Kentucky. She graduated summa cum laude in Political Science from the University of Kentucky and received her Juris Doctor from the University of Cincinnati College of Law.

A self-proclaimed foodie, Grayson loves experimenting with new recipes while using one of her many kitchen gadgets. She also enjoys gardening in her backyard and attending concerts with her family and friends. She loves listening to Bluegrass in Rabbit Hash and exploring the many new restaurants in Northern Kentucky.

Grayson is a vocalist with Suits that Rock, a local band comprised of regional business and community leaders who perform annually in support of youth programs at The Carnegie.

She currently resides in Boone County with her husband, Trey, and their two daughters, Alex (currently a freshman at Harvard) and Kate – and a “brilliant but stubborn” miniature dachshund, Oliver.
