Lindqvist nets goal with 1:17 remaining in regulation to give NKU men’s soccer 2-1 victory at Green Bay

Rikard Lindqvist netted a goal with just 1:17 remaining in regulation to give the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team a 2-1 win at Green Bay on Saturday night in a key Horizon League contest.

Green Bay (4-1-1, 1-1-0 Horizon League) found the back of the net first, with Clay Brown giving the Phoenix a 1-0 advantage in the 72nd minute after teammate Bernard Assibey Rhule controlled the ball and played it to Brown, who beat the keeper for his first goal of the season.

NKU’s Alex Willis evened the game at 1-all in the 73rd minute by finishing a corner kick with a header. The contest appeared destined for overtime, but Lindqvist placed a shot in the lower right corner of the net in the 89th minute after Alex Greive centered the ball to collect the winning assist.

NKU improved to 6-1 overall, 1-1 in the Horizon League. Greive now has nine assists, and he entered the weekend tied for first in the NCAA in that category. Willis, a freshman from Faversham, England, has scored eight goals this season and was tied for first in the NCAA in points and second in goals going into Saturday night’s contest.

The Norse play at Purdue Fort Wayne on Monday at 7 p.m.

NKU VOLLEYBALL WIN STREAK AT SIX: The NKU volleyball extended its winning streak to six by rallying from a two-set deficit to defeat Oral Roberts in the finale of the SIUE Cougar Classic on Saturday. The Norse prevailed by scores of 19-25, 25-27, 25-21, 25-14, 15-13.

Haley Libs collected 18 kills — including four in the decisive fifth set — and attacked at a .320 clip to lead NKU, which improved to 8-3. Libs, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, now has 1,296 career kills and is No. 11 on NKU’s all-time kills list.

NKU finished with 14 aces, the second-most service winners in a single match since the Norse transitioned to Division I. NKU served up 15 aces against Saint Peter’s on Aug. 24, 2012, which was also the Norse’s first-ever Division I match. Maddy Weber led NKU with four aces against Oral Roberts on Saturday.

TMC VOLLEYBALL LOSES AT WITTENBERG: The Thomas More volleyball team lost for the first time this season, falling at Wittenberg by scores of 26-24, 26-24, 14-25, 25-18 on Saturday. The Saints, ranked No. 14 nationally in the NCAA Division III poll, are now 11-1. Wittenberg is ranked No. 3 in the nation.

Jenna Mummert and Emily Mohs combined for 30 kills and nine blocks to lead Thomas More. Mummert finished with 16 kills and six blocks, while Mohs added 14 kills and three blocks. Jenna Fessler dished out 44 assists and added 10 digs.

Thomas More plays host to Mount St. Joseph at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills.

SAINTS WIN ON THE ROAD: The Thomas More women’s soccer team notched its first win of the season on Saturday with a 1-0 road decision over Sewanee (Tenn.). Abby Hutcheson scored the only goal of the contest in the 50th minute off an assist by Gracie Kunkel.

Goalkeeper Maddy Kim posted the shutout for the Saints and recorded one save. Thomas More improved to 1-5 with the victory.
