Beyond the Curb: Explore Covington, see urban living in iconic architecture, distinct neighborhoods

This year, to celebrate the Catalytic Fund’s 5-year anniversary, Beyond the Curb is featuring 5 properties in each of the 5 urban river cities of Northern Kentucky: Ludlow, Covington, Newport, Bellevue and Dayton. The one-day, self-guided tour will be on Sun. Sept. 30 from 9-5. Tickets are available at www.BeyondtheCurb.org.

Here’s what you’ll see in Covington.

With a population of around 40,000, Covington is Kentucky’s fifth largest town. It is known for its tech and entrepreneurial corridor, iconic architecture and vibrant art scene. The city has 19 distinct neighborhoods which offer charming parks, historic buildings, and many interesting shopping, dining and entertainment options. Come explore Covington!

The Covington properties on the tour are exclusively sponsored by First Financial Bank and include:

226 W. Pike St. #5

You’d never guess it from the outside, but this light-filled condo has two floors and is 2,500 sft., making it perfect for 2 adults, 3 kids, and 1 dog.

Duveneck Square Apartments, 710 Washington Ave.

This new apartment building has comfortable, contemporary interiors and lots of amenities, but perhaps the best amenity is the location, right in the heart of Covington’s creative, energetic downtown.

220 E. 4th St.

This 1869 multi-family home is being extensively renovated to provide four one-bedroom living spaces that will be rented through Airbnb. Guests will love the shared backyard space and the spectacular wintertime views and especially its location, close to all the dining and entertainment options in Covington, Newport, and Cincinnati.

217 Kentucky Ave.

From one room to a shotgun floorplan to its current contemporary cottage style, this 1877 house has been through many changes. Its lofted ceilings, many windows and soothing colors make it seem much larger than it is.

215 Kentucky Ave.

The renovation of this former “shotgun” house provides great inspiration for sustainability, reuse and aging-in-place strategies. The entire set of kitchen cabinets, kitchen tile, much of the lighting and more were all locally salvaged. This peaceful home is a testament to clever storage and thoughtful upcycling.
