Miyah Watford scored a goal less than two minutes into overtime Sunday to give the Murray State women’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over visiting Northern Kentucky University at Cutchin Field.
Abby Jones assisted Watford’s winning shot, which found the back of the net in the far corner. Watford also tallied a first-half goal for the Racers, who finished with a 19-9 advantage in shots and improved to 2-0.Trailing 1-0 early in the second half, NKU’s Shawna Zaken coverted a penalty kick to even the contest at 1-all. Zaken had been fouled in the box to set up the penalty kick.
The defenses controlled the remainder of regulation, setting the stage for Watford’s overtime heroics at the 91:40 mark.
NKU goalie Emily Lohmann finished with six saves. The Norse, who opened the season Friday with a 3-0 win over Indiana State, attempted four corner kicks, while Murray State finished with eight corners.
A year ago, Murray State earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Racers are now 3-1-1 in the all-time series against the Norse.
NKU will play host to Xavier at 7 p.m. Thursday at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
