Covington’s Housing Authority awarded $2.2M grant for Jobs Plus Initiative in City Heights

The Housing Authority of Covington has been awarded more than $2.2 million from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Executive Director Steve Arlinghaus was notified that the agency will receive a $2,203,270 grant for its Jobs Plus Initiative. The grant will target the agency’s City Heights community over the next four years.

This is the largest single social service grant ever awarded to the agency.

The purpose of the grant is to develop locally-based, job-driven approaches to increase earnings and employment among low-income residents. The grant’s core components include: 1) employment and training, 2) community supports for work, and 3) financial incentives.

Several local organizations supported the agency’s federal application by pledging over $600,000 in in-kind contributions to the project.

The Northern Kentucky Area Development District, Kentucky Career Center, and Brighton Center are among the project’s lead partners. Grant funds will be used for agency and partner staffing, office space, and resident supports designed to increase access to services while offering incentives for program participation.

A resolution to accept the grant award will be presented at the agency’s August 15 Board Meeting. If approved, work will commence in September.

This grant appears to integrate job opportunities, financial incentives and affordable housing. One element cannot exist without the others. Congratulations to Covington in going after this federal money to improve the economic and social well being of city residents.
