Briefs: Kim Kitchen is Pioneer Award recipient, HONK Blitz Build, lots of development in Fort Mitchell

Kim Kitchen was presented with the Kenton County Fiscal Court’s Pioneer Award this week.

Kitchen is a Registered Nurse at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood, Kentucky. When St. Elizabeth created the Thoracic Care Unit, a state-of-the-art expert care unit that diagnoses and surgically treats cancers of the lung, esophagus, and chest wall, Kitchen stepped up and convinced the architects to redraw the original plans because they would not be best for patients and doctors.

Her creative organization, Scrapping with a Mission, taps into women’s passion for capturing their family memories. The program is designed to empower high school children and help them see problems in other countries. Over the years, this annual event has raised thousands of dollars to send students and community members to other countries to assist people with their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs. She also helped her local school increase their test scores by sitting on the School-Based Decision-Making council and has volunteered thousands of hours supporting local elementary schools.

Kim Kitchen resides in Independence with her husband, Steve. They have four children. The Kenton County Pioneer Award honors living residents of Kenton County who have a record of outstanding service to the community and exemplify the highest standards of personal integrity.

Blitz Build today and Sunday

About 35 area builders will volunteer at an intensive build at 219 Dell Street in Elsmere today and Sunday, the fifth house between Housing Opportunities of Northern Kentucky (HONK) and the Building Industry Association of Northern Kentucky and the City of Elsmere.

This home has special importance because it is The Legacy House, in honor of Father Jack Goeke who founded HONK more than 25 years ago.

Much of the construction material has been donated by local businesses and work will be provided by volunteers from local churches and organizations.

Fort Mitchell redevelopment

The redevelopment of the Zalla-owned site adjacent to Graeter’s in Fort Mitchell is well underway.

Bru Burger with an outdoor dining option, Zoe’s Hair Salon, Charles Schwab, Coldwell Bankers and others will be joining this mixed-use development that is scheduled to open in late fall this year.

Another project along Buttermilk Pike includes the demolition of Average Joe’s and the State Farm buildings to make way for a new U.S Bank building.

The city is also looking forward to a quality development on the site of the vacated Remke Market building on Dixie Highway, while a custom home builder is locating in the building at Dixie and Huckleberry and a financial advisor with Edward Jones is moving into space next to Biggby Coffee.
