Dinsmore Homestead: Join a special tour of the amazing books among 2,000 in the family collection

The Dinsmore Homestead is a unique historic site in Boone County where visitors can learn what life was like in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

In 1838, James Dinsmore purchased about 700 acres in Boone County where his family settled, and they lived on the land for generations. They were a well-educated, well-connected and well-traveled family.

The Dinsmore Homestead Foundation purchased the home in 1988 and operates it today. Nearly all the accumulated contents of the home and outbuildings survive intact. A collection of nearly 90,000 pages of family documents, including letters, journals, and business records, are on microfilm.

This weekend, you can get an intimate look at the Dinsmore Homestead with a special book tour on Saturday 1-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m.

Image the possibilities. What did a young girl of the 1890s include in her scrapbook? What’s inside a mid-10th century sketchbook?

Enjoy the tour that will take you through the amazing collection.

Archivists and local historians will talk about the books at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, and then Sunday at 2 p.m.

Hear E. Tankersley sing some of Julia Dinsmore’s favorite tunes.

Enjoy this focused tour of what the Dinsmore family read and enjoyed.

Each room offers the opportunity for a different topic encompassed by a 2,000-plus collection.
