Throughout the Commonwealth, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Adopt-a-Highway (AAH) volunteers will participate in the scheduled 2018 Summer Scrub cleanup between Monday, June 18, and Sunday, June 24.
Volunteer groups are eligible to submit their Adopt-a-Highway projects for entry in Gov. Matt Bevin’s Beautify the Bluegrass contest, sponsored by Kentucky Living.
Summer Scrub is an annual roadside cleanup organized by KYTC’s Adopt-a-Highway program to keep Kentucky’s highway system litter-free for travelers during the summer travel season. Participating groups can submit their Summer Scrub cleanup to the 2018 Beautify the Bluegrass contest launched by Gov. Bevin to encourage Kentuckians to come together to make their communities shine.
The Beautify the Bluegrass contest is open to all groups of any size who are doing work to repair, enhance or beautify an area in their community. The winning group will receive a barbecue meal with Gov. Bevin and Lt. Governor Jenean Hampton for up to 200 team members.
“Adopt-a-Highway volunteers are civic-minded citizens of all ages doing their part to keep our roadsides looking their best,” said Transportation Cabinet Secretary Greg Thomas. “While they are out on the roads during the busy summer driving season, please slow down and drive without distractions to keep them safe.”
KYTC established the Adopt-a-Highway program in 1988 to create a partnership between citizens, community and government; to establish a sense of pride in the Bluegrass state; to promote environmental awareness; and to support tourism. Volunteers clean approximately 3,400 miles of roadside annually, setting an example of responsible environmental stewardship.
Any permanently established business, association, government entity, community or public organization can adopt a stretch of highway. Local businesses, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, high school organizations, service clubs, veterans groups, college fraternities and sororities, professional organizations, sports teams, church groups and many others participate in the program.
